10K's

I woke up this morning and I must admit I was a little worried.  I was going to run 10K's but I hadn't run 10K's in almost a year.  I did a 5K run a few days ago and I was pretty beat after that so I wasn't too sure how I would handle a 10K.  My real fear was that I would end up like Frodo on the steps of Mt. Doom. Waving away imaginary flies from my face while the eye of Sauron was checking out the men of the west.....not in a gay way....more in a "I'll get my orcs to kill you" kind of way.  But I digress......

My stratagem was simple.  Don't get too tired!  Pace yourself.  I completed the 10K Bridge to Brisbane last year in one hour and nine minutes.  If I could come in around that time then it would be a good day.  It was a good day.  I finished my 10K in one hour and eight minutes.  One minute faster than last year.  Take that Sauron!

I also concentrated on how I was running.  I have found that when I get tired I hunch my back and shoulders.  My head drops a little and I'm more throwing myself forward rather than running.  I paid attention and whenever I felt my shoulders start to drop I straightened my back and a very weird thing happened.  I could breath so much better.  It really opened up my lungs and I wasn't working as hard.  At the 6K mark I felt great.  Who knew that a proper running technique would help!

So, where do I go from here.  I'm still steadily approaching my goal of 15k's in September (I'm actually currently planning out the route).  I'm talking to my friends (VH and AF) about 5K running plans and I also plan to run a few days with them as they prepare for the 5K Bridge to Brisbane.  Also, I'm really intrigued by the idea of barefoot running.  I've found a cricket pitch not to far from home.  I've decided that I'm going to do some barefoot running there.  I've jumped onto the net and have been pricing some different shoes that promote a more barefoot experience.  Look out for a barefoot vs. running shoe post coming out soon.

  2. Hey JVN. Thanks. I really am thinking about trying it. I've done barefoot running at the beach (did 7k's) but I would love to try out on a long run. My foot was a little sore during todays run. I'm just really curious to see what its like and all the weird looks I'll get.
