Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Apparently I’m not very smart.  For whatever reason I thought January only had 30 days.  It has 31 days.  I was able to do a 6k run yesterday which means I brought up my monthly total to 100 kilometres.  Which means I am about 10% done my quest (9.90% to be exact).  My goal was to do at least 80ks per month and I’m ahead of schedule.  Hopefully that will come in handy if there are any unforeseen injuries along the way.  I was icing my right heel yesterday to ward off any heel spur issues.  I’m stretching well before and after each run.  Let’s hope that is enough to keep my injury free.
The Run itself was good.  I had about an hour to from end of work to when I had to pick up my wife.  I decided to see how far the running path goes.  I wasn’t sure exactly what was in store for me.  I didn’t know if there was going to be hills or if any of the path had gotten washed out due to the recent floods.  Everything turned out fine and from my starting spot to the end of the path was 3ks.  I turned around and completed the 6k run.  It was also the longest run I have done in my Nike Free shoes.  So far, completely pain free (other than your typical post run soreness).

Looking forward to the next month and hopefully getting fitter and stronger.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I finally got a run in yesterday.  It had been almost a week.  It was a week of rain here in Brisbane.  A week of rain and 3 days of flooding.  Sometimes when you live in the tropics the rain starts and it just wont stop.  There were trees and branches all over the sidewalks and the running paths.  4 people have been killed as a result of the rain and flooding.  At home, we were without power for over 52 hours.  Lots of takeaway food :(

After work I got in a 5k run.  It was an OK run.  The park that I run in had flooded.  So after the water receded it left mud and branches strewn around and the smell.  My god the smell at certain parts was revolting.  I work near a floodplain so what can one expect.

I managed to get in 94ks this month.  I was hoping to get closer to 100ks but the weather put a stop to that.  It is raining again today but so far it is just spitting.  I'm hoping by 4 pm I'll be able to get in another 4k or 5k run in.  Fingers crossed.

I started a new blog.  This one is about books that I am reading.  You can find the blog here.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

This should have been written yesterday as I completed the run yesterday and I have not completed or will complete a run today.  I didn't update my blog due to the fact that Mrs. Slowrunning had use the laptop for her work.  I'm not sure that her work should take precedence over my blog posting but there it is.

I got off work at 4 pm and decided to get another 4k run in.  Despite the weather being 30c I got out there.  No more excuses.  It wasn't a very sunny day it was just very muggy.  My fitness is slowly starting to come back.  I know this because I completed my 4k run exactly (to the second) one minute faster.  Maybe it was the blueberries I was snacking at work that gave me that little bit of more energy.  I felt great after the 4k run.  My wife didn't go swimming so I wasn't able to jump in the pool and be refreshed.  But she is going to go swimming tomorrow and I'll do another 4k run and then go for a wonderful swim.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I got off work today at 4 pm.  I didn't have to pick up my wife until 5 pm.  What to do?  Well....I ran.  Thankfully there is a great running path just down the road from work.  It goes for miles.  I've never tried to run the full distance before.  One day I'll have to run and see how far it goes.  For me today I just ran 4ks.

It was hot, I forgot my hat.....the sweat was incredible..a lot.  But that's OK.  I live in the tropics and its summer.  My wife is not a runner but she is a swimmer.  So she wanted to go to the pool after work.  While she was busy doing laps I just lounged in the pool.  It was fantastic way to spend the evening.  The pool wasn't cold.....but it was refreshing.  I have to do that more often.....maybe like.....tomorrow?

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Saturday morning and up at 5:30 am to hit the road.  I felt great this morning.  Sure, my fitness is no where near where it used to be but every run I feel better and stronger.  It's not far off.  Today's run was amazing.  The sun was shinning on the lake and the amount of people that were out was incredible.  They inspire me so much.

I ran very slowly today.  Intent on running longer then I did my last workout.  I completed that task.  This time I didn't take a break until after the 3 kilometer mark.  Running a little bit further every time.  My times are much, much slower then back in November but it's not that far off really.  Next week I was thinking about pushing myself a little bit harder to see how I do.

I weighed myself when I got back from the run and I am now at my pre-December weight.  90.9kg.  That made me feel a whole lot better.  During the Christmas period my weight had almost hit 94kg so it was nice to get to where I was.  My lowest weight since starting this was 89.2kg.  Not that far off now.

Does anyone know about an app for your smart phone/IPhone that can stop sweat getting into your eyes when you run?  Let me know.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I followed up my amazing (OK.....maybe not......) 5k run yesterday with a quick 3k run before work.  The weather continues to cooperate and is quite cool.....at 5:30 in the morning.  I could tell I was not the only one who was enjoying the cool weather.  There were hundreds of people out this morning.  Either walking their dogs, walking themselves or running.  It was very inspiring thing to behold.  Way to go Forest Lake!

I'm getting closer to that 80ks per month goal.....sure.....50ks where done 2 months ago but I have to start somewhere.  Lets hope I get over the 100k mark by the end of this month.......which would mean (if my math is correct) I would have done about 10% of my goal.

I haven't added a new picture for a few posts now.  For whatever reason blogger will not allow pictures.  I'm not sure if its my sign in or everyones sign in but for the time being I can not add photo's.  Lets hope that gets fixed soon.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

The heatwave kicked my ass.  For 3 days I have not run.  I wanted to.  One day I got up at 5:30 am and it was 27c but that is all I will say about this heatwave.  It has finally broke.  Lets hope it stays away for a long time.

I wake up at 5:30 for my 5k run.  It was nice and cool and I was looking forward to this run.  I haven't done a good 5k run in a long time......I got a 5k run in but it was good.  I'm 4 minutes off the pace I had in November.  This tells me that I need to get a lot fitter then I currently am.  I guess I can only get better.

I'm injury free at the moment.  No pains at all.  Fingers crossed that it continues forever.  I'm loving my Nike Free shoes.  I was worried that my knees would feel some pain but that has not happened.  I am curious to see what happens when I go out and do a 10k run.

I've started to listen to a new artist out of Belfast.  Her name is Susie Blue.  I put some of her music on my running playlist and was suprised of how much I enjoyed listening to her music while I ran.  Curious because the music is very quiet and introspective.  That said I was never a fan of "hard music" when I run.  You will not find Rage Against the Machine on my running playlist.  The Flaming Lips and Johnny Cash are more likely.  If you want to check out Susie Blue's music you can find her here and here.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I know I carry on a lot about the heat here.  I've looked at some of my old posts and it dominates the blog.  I am going to try and migrate from writing about the heat as it is something that I am just going to have to deal with.  Saying that.......it was 36c today!  Ridiculous!  I manged to get in a 3k run.  I woke up very early to run in the coolest weather possible.

I'm taking tomorrow off as a rest day and doing a 40 minute (about 6 or 7ks) run on Friday.  I'm going to have to start increasing my distance if I want to complete that 10k run by Feb 28th.

I've been going around trying to convince people to run the half marathon with me.  The closest I have gotten is my running Buddy VH.  The half marathon track leads right past her house.....so she might throw water at me (if she is awake).  So if anyone wants to run the half marathon please let me know.

Brisbane to Sydney (Opera House) virtual run

My run today was delayed due to domestic responsbility.  I was hoping to be able to run at 6 am but it was closer to 7 am before I got on the road.  I was worried that the heat would be too much but lucky for me it was ok.  Today was my first 5k run in a long time.  It felt great.  No niggling injuries to worry about.  The (Christmas)weight is slowly coming off and I am almost back to where I was before December.  Just a few more weeks and I'll be back.  My fitness is no where near where it was.....but I'll get it back.  I had to take a few walking breaks today but the key was to complete the run.  Tomorrow I'm going to do a very easy 3k run.  Now it's all about just completing as many ks as I can.

If you have been following the news you would have seen Australia is in the grip of a heat wave.  Bush fires are raging across the country.  Right now in Brisbane that is not an issue.  The temperatures have been steady and not too bad.  But that looks like it might change soon.  Wednesday the forecast is calling for a 38c day.  That's awful.  I'm going to wake up around 5:30 am tomorrow to get a run in.  It should be reasonably cool at that time of the day.

If anyone is interested in doing the half marathon with me Aug 5th please let me know.  It should be a great day.

I wanted to say well done to the newest slowrunning member on the MiCoach website.  Battlesausage has completed over 60ks in the last couple of weeks.  Even doing 10ks recently.  Congrats and keep it up B.Sausage.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

If you are reading this blog for the first time then I should tell you what I mean by a virtual run to the Sydney Opera House.  I live in Brisbane Australia (my door step is exactly 1010 kilometers or 627 miles away from the Opera House) and I'm going to try and run the 1010 kilometers in a calendar year.  The inspiration for my goal was from loyal blog reader and dear friend JVN who mentioned that she had run over a 1000 kilometers in one year.  I was very impressed by this and I wanted to do the same.  Currently I have run 56k's (not includding the 3 that I have run today.....but more on that later) which means to meet my goal I have to run 84 ks a month and roughly 21ks a week(this week I have run over 8ks).  Yikes.  While 56ks looks good for the 5th day of Janurary that is 2 months worth of running.  My running has been curtailed by injury, the Christmas period and tropical heat.  The good news is that I'm fully healed and Christmas is over....the bad news.......I live in Brisbane Australia and it is currently summer.  I've been living in Brisbane for almost 6 years having moved here from Toronto Canada (for love).  I don't handle the heat very well.  For instance today I woke up at 5:30 am and ran my 3ks in 23c heat.  This will mean for the next few months waking up at 5 or 5:30 in the morning is just something that I will have to get used to doing.

The run today was good.  I'm no where near at the fitness level I was back in October.  But I am getting there.  I have also decided on when I am going to attempt my half marathon.  August the 4th The Brisbane Marathon and half marathon is run.  The most I have ever completed was 15ks.  So here is the schedule that I have planned for the next 6 months.  By Feburary 28th to have completed a 10k run.  From March 1st to mid July I will be training to run the half marathon and will complete another 15k run sometime late July.  From there its all about building up my fitness level and going from 15ks to 16ks to 17ks etc etc.

I hope you follow along my journey and witness my ups and downs.  If you are a fellow runner and have any advice for this novice please leave a comment on this blog posting.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera house (virtual run)

At 6:00 am this morning it was 22c and rising…..quick.  I was out the door by 6:15 am and did my first real run since Dec 11th 2012.  It was a great run.  I only did do 3k’s and it is amazing how much fitness I have lost since November.  I was pretty tired just doing 3ks.

I’m slowly taking the Christmas weight off.  I’ve lost one kilo this week.  I’m hoping to get down to my November weight by the end of the month.  If I keep running and sticking to my eating plan that should be an easy goal to reach.

I’ve never really talked about my meal plan before.  Let me do that now.  I get most of my meals supplied by lite and easy.  Lite and easy is a company that sends out a box of food every Thursday to my house.  In the box is all I need for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is worked out to how many calories I need to eat per day.  Currently I’m on a 1200 calorie a day meal plan.  Because everything is prepared I don’t eat any fast food.  I wake up in the morning and everything is ready to go.  The food is fresh and healthy and I’m really enjoying the variety.  You can find out more about lite and easy here.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

When I got home last night from work Mrs Slowrunning told me she wanted to go for a swim early in the morning.  I thought that was fair and I would not go for a run.  At 6 am the alarm goes off and Mrs Slowrunning drags herself out of bed and gets ready to go for a swim.  I drive her to the local pool and it is closed until Jan 14th.  Welcome to Brisbane Australia.  The biggest little town in the world!  So instead of an early morning swim we got our dog Polly and went for a walk around the lake in Forest Lake.  Because I feel jittery every time I’m around that lake I ran a little bit.  When the wife and Polly would stop for water I would jog ahead and run back.  While it wasn’t the best exercise day of my life it was lovely to spend 30 minutes with Mrs Slowrunning the slowrunning dog Polly.
I love my Nike Free shoes.  I can’t wait to open it up and go for a longer run.  I want to see how I feel after 3ks of nonstop running.  My theory is that my injuries will slowly fade away.  Well……that’s my theory at least.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

It has been over 3 weeks since my last run.  The same thing happened to me last year.  It's the Christmas break and other things in my life taking over.  Also the weather has been ridiculous.  It's too hot at the moment.....but the good news is that on Jan 1st 2013 I got back out there and did a very simple slow run.  It was nice to run again.

I got new shoes for Christmas.  I breaking in my new Nike Free.  It didn't hurt too much on my first run.  I'm going to pick up the pace tomorrow and see how I feel.  The Nike Free simulates the barefoot running experience.  You definitely feel every step.  It felt great.  I will use the Nike Free's for short runs and keep my other shoes for the longer runs.......hopefully migrating to just using the Nike Free's for all my runs.  Fingers crossed.

I haven't posted the map in a few postings.  I want to wait till I do a few longer runs before posting the map.......but that is coming.....also I have put on some Christmas weight :(

I would like to welcome a 4th member to the slowrunning MiCoach site.  Welcome battlesausage (not his real name).  Our first overseas member.  Welcome and good luck with your slowrunning.
