It is over.  I have run 1000ks this year (technically 1000.52ks......just saying) and I'm tired.  I need a rest.  I'm taking a week off.  It occurred to me that the longest break I have taken this year was 4 days.  That was due to me being sick.  So I need a week to relax, rest and think of what to do next year.  I have some thoughts but I have not decided what my goal is going to be.

I wanted to thank a few people that have helped me this year.  JVN for the inspiration of running the 1000ks, Battle Sausage for running with me.....sure you were in Canada and I was running in Australia.....maybe one day we can go for a run.  VH for being my running partner this year......miss our chats.  Mrs Slowrunning for actually going on 2 runs with me.  Thank you to everyone else who read or commented on my blog of messaged me on Facebook.

Here is a picture of me actually running over the Harbour Bridge and to the Sydney Opera House.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run...........almost f$#%ing done)

I had a really good run yesterday.  The longest run of the year so far.  12.4ks.  I wanted to do 20ks but I as I got up in the morning I realized that even at 4:30 in the morning the heat was going to be a problem.  So I watched the first half of the Manchester United v. Hull City and while the game was paused I hit the road.

I'm really loving my Blue tooth headset.  I switched the ear buds and had a much better fit.  I wasn't constantly adjusting the headset.  I would recommend wireless headsets to all runners.  It will set you back about $100 (Australian dollars) but it is so worth it.

I have 11.82ks left to go for the 1000.  I'm going to finish it with another big run.  A few people have suggested that I can do a few quick small runs but I don't think that would be fun at all.  I love the struggle of doing a long run.  I love getting up at 4:30 am and sharing the road with other runners.  I can't wait to tackle that 11.82k run.  My legs are a little sore today but my goal is to get this done tomorrow because  I need a rest!

Stats:
Distance: 12.4ks (7.1 miles)
Total kilometers: 988.18 ks (614.5 miles)

Average ks per day (to achieve target): 3.94 ks (2.7 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run........almost bloody done)

Only a few days left to go......6 days........(5 since I'm not going to run on Christmas day) but I'm progressing well.  I've run almost 17ks over the last 3 days.  Which means at some point I will have to get in a long run.  I haven't figured out which day yet.....but boxing day is looking promising.

The heat over the last few days have been horrendous.  I've been taking my time and not over doing any of my runs.  When I run in the shade everything is great but as soon as I step out into the light......

I'm rocking some brand new running gear.  The Plantronics backbeat 2 go Bluetooth headphones.  I shall never run with wires again!  I have to do a little bit more testing with these headphones.  The package includes 3 different sizes for ear buds.  I wasn't happy with the ones I choose so I will switch up the ear buds for my next run.

Stats:
Distance: 16.78ks (10.7 miles)
Total kilometers: 975.78 ks (606.5 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run.......almost bloody done)

I had the longest day at work.  It dragged and dragged.  I could barely keep my eyes open on the way home and going for a run was the last thing on my mind.  The heat was oppressive, my legs felt stiff....blah blah blah....I could go on and on about how I wasn't going to run.......but in the end I got another 5.3ks in.  It started off slowly but eventually I kept my head down and just finished the run.

I'm thinking about taking a day off tomorrow but somehow there might be a sneaky run in there somewhere.

Stats:

Distance: 5.2ks (3.5 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run....almost bloody done!!!!!)

Another 5.7ks done.  There are 12 days left in the year......You would have to think that Christmas Day is a wash so 11 days to go.  OK.....so its time to knuckle down.  With 12 (or is it 11?) days to go I have to run pretty much 4 ks a day.....which means I can try to run 5ks a day or I can do one big run and knock off as much as I can.....which is what I'm going to try to do......one big run......I'm aiming for a 20k run soon.  My last day at work is tomorrow so I have a few weeks off.  If I get an injury now I'm screwed!

Stats:

Distance: 5.7ks (4 miles)
Total kilometers: 953.7 ks (592 miles)
Kilometres left: 46.3 ks (28 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I'm tired.  My body is starting to ache.  Thankfully I have 3 weeks left to go.  I can soon rest.  I'm looking forward to that rest.  Not that I'm getting jaded.  Quite the opposite.  I'm really enjoying my running at the moment.  I have fallen into quite a pattern and feel that my running is getting stronger.  The one thing that is slowing my down is the heat and the humidity.  It's haunting my steps.  I run only after 5 pm but even at that time the heat can be oppressive.  I keep reminding myself....only 3 weeks only 3 weeks.

I'm currently looking into joining a soccer team.  There is a very nice soccer club just down the street.  I've contacted them and enquired about joining a men's league.  The last time I played outdoor soccer was 1999.  While I am older I can honestly say that I am fitter now.  I might have had a bit of a drinking problem in my younger days.

Stats:

Distance: 37.6ks (23.6 miles)
Total kilometers: 948 ks (589.1 miles)
Kilometres left: 52 ks (55.6 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I spent a week at the beach.  Which meant I got to do some beach running.  I love beach running.  Waking up at 4:30 in the morning and feeling the sand under your feet is something I recommend that everyone should do.  The one problem is that during my 8k beach run I've injured my foot.  I've done 900ks this year and I have finally got a slight injury. (more about the injury here) It's nothing that is going to stop me running.  It's just annoying and I can feel it sting every few steps.  I happened to buy a running magazine during my vacation and it just happened to have some exercises/stretches for my foot pain.  I completed a 5.5k run today and it was alright.  Not too much pain.

I've now run over 900ks and with 4 weeks left to go I've got some work to do.  I'm going to try finish this year with a big run.  I'll keep you posted on how that goes.

Here are some stats for you:

Distance: 39.6ks (24.6 miles)
Total kilometers: 910.94 ks (566.56 miles)
Kilometres left: 89.06 ks (55.6 miles)

Bisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I have a month and a half left to go.  I can't believe I'm at the threshold of completing my goal.  It has been just an amazing year.  The thing I'm most thankful for is  (up till now) being injury free.  I've had a niggle or two but nothing so serious that it has kept me sidelined for a few weeks.  The worst thing that has happened was the flu.  But I've come out the other side.

My favorite run this year was my run in Sydney.  Running over the Harbor Bridge (3 times) through the streets of Sydney and then finally climbing the steps of the Opera House left me almost in tears.  I had dreamed of doing that run for so long that I couldn't believe I was actually doing it.  If you have never run The Harbor Bridge/Sydney Opera House then put that on your run bucket list.  It's a must.

Next week I'm going on a vacation.  I'm heading over to Coolum for 7 days.  This means there will be lots and lots of early morning/late at night beach running.  I plan on doing lots of Coolum to Peregian runs.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Another week gone and one week closer to the end.  It was good.  I managed to get in 23.22ks.  But, I must admit I did let myself down a little bit.  Last Monday I set my alarm for 5:00 am to run.  I hit snooze and slept for another hour.  Because of that lie in I had to work harder for the rest of the week which meant running 4 days straight.  I try not to run that many days in a row.  The last thing I need at this point is an injury.  That would de-rail my quest.

About 2 months ago I changed what I listen to when I run.  I used to listen to just music.  Now I have slipped some podcasts.  I was wondering if that was slowing down my run.  Yesterday I switched back to music and I felt that my run was so much stronger.  I think I might have to re-think the podcast and go back to music.

Stats:
Distance: 23.22ks (14.4 miles)
Total kilometers: 832.43ks (517.43miles)
Kilometres left: 167.57ks (104.1 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Lou Reed died yesterday.  I really love Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground.  I had the pleasure of seeing Lou play at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto Canada in the late 90's.  What an incredible show.  Pale blue eyes is still one of the songs that can stop me dead in my tracks and force me to listen to the song.  Such a delicate fine thing.  For my run today I listened the Velvet Underground and was happy to do so.

I'm still on track to meet my goal.  Today is the 29th of October and I have 190ks to go.  Which means I have to average 23.75ks a week for the last 2 months of the year.  I've stayed pretty healthy lately and have no significant soreness.  Unless something catastrophic happens the goal shall be met.

Here are some stats for ya.

Distance: 32.78ks (20.4 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Today is the 21st of October.  My last update was done on the 10th.  I've run a lot since then.  I'm behind my goal. (1000 kilometers in one year)  I've worked out that I have to run at least 25ks a week for the rest of the year to meet my goal. This is going to be challenging.  But I'm up for the challenge.  I just have to stay healthy the whole time.  Shouldn't be that hard.

I just got an update from Adidas saying that my shoes have seen too many kilometers.  That is a nice message to get.  With Christmas around the corner I think I might ask Santa for a new pair of shoes.  I really enjoy the Nike free and have been injury free all year long.  What do you think?

Photography is my hobby that I'm trying to turn into a profession.  On the weekend I took some pictures for lululemon athletica.  (you can find pictures here).  I acquired one of their shirts for running and it is the best running shirt ever.  If you ever get a chance buy this running shirt.  You will be very happy.

Stats:

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I can't believe it has been a month since my last post.  I can assure you that I have not stopped running but have just stopped posting.  I never realized how busy my new job would be.  On top of that I've done quite a few photography jobs (visit www.cabralphotography.com to see) so that has also taken up a lot of my time.

So, where am I on my quest to complete a 1000ks this year?  I'm just behind my target.  With only 2 and half months left to go I have to step up my running and make up those lost kilometers.  This week has been a good one.  I'm already done 20ks and I'm going for a run tomorrow morning.  As the weather heats up (its going to be 36c today) I'm back to waking up at 5:00 am to get my run in.  I took a picture of what my run looked like yesterday as the sun rose over Forest Lake.

Distance: 97.57ks (60.63 miles)

A message from a reader.

This morning I got a lovely message from a friend and reader of this blog.  It is wonderful to read that this blog has inspired another person to change their lives.  It's messages, like the one I got this morning that help and push me going forward.  So a big thank you to my friend who has in turn inspired me today.

- The Slow Running Man -

"I recently (2 months now) have developed a walking regiment. Everyday for a minimal of one half hour I take a power walk. Combined with a switch to a primarily raw food diet, I have managed to lose approx. 30 pounds. I just wanted you to know that you were actually one of the influences upon me to begin exercising. So, you just never know who you might help, when you make changes in your own life. I had progressively become more sedentary, internet addicted, and plain lazy. But it feels good to become active again. Thanks mate."

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

The B2B didn’t happen this year.  I’ve run the Bridge to Brisbane the last 3 years and I was very much looking forward to running it this year but I got sick on the eve of the event and wasn’t able to run it.  The shame of it is that I had just caught up to my running goal.  By the end of August I needed to have run 640ks and that is exactly where I was.  I’ve run 640ks.  Then I got sick.  Between the B2B and today I’ve run 6ks.  So I am behind again.  By the end of this month I need to be at 720ks.  I have to start catching up…..today.

The silver lining in all this is that I’ve given my body a good break.  When I hit the road later today it will be with lots of energy.  I believe this is the longest break I’ve taken all year.  So really this could be a very necessary thing that my body needs right now.

I’ve also started to think about what my goal is going to be for next year.  My goal this year is 1000ks or from my front door step to the Sydney Opera House steps.  What should my goal be next year?  Please give me some ideas

Distance: 25ks (15.5 miles)

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

If my calculations are right by the end of this month I should be caught up or almost caught up.  To be fully caught up I need to be at 640ks before September starts.  After my 6.42k run tonight I should be close.

Today's run was great.  The weather was perfect and I just enjoyed the fact that I was out there running.  I had a bit of a pain in my lower back that I hoped I stretched the pain out after the run.  I am going to put an ice pack on my lower back before I go to bed tonight.

I'm very happy report that I have recruited another runner.  Good friend MO is going to run with me tomorrow.  I'm going to use the same principal that I used with VH.  1 minute of running and 2 minutes of walking.  In total I'm hoping that we can do 4ks.  MO gets off work at 5:00 pm so what I might do is go for a pre-run and get in a 4 or a 5k run before we meet up.  Hopefully tomorrow I will have completed 9ks.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run) and the Return of VH

Once again this post is a little bit late.  I've done 3 runs.....well really 2.1 runs since my last post.  I tried to run with the slowrunning dog which meant that we ran/walked for a little bit and then she just lied down on the ground and I had to carry her for the rest of the time.  So, here I am....a grown man carrying a little white dog around.

I also completed a 5.5k run Saturday morning.  It was a nice run and I enjoyed it.  After that it was downhill.  I felt very lethargic for the rest of the weekend.  All I wanted to do was take naps.  I managed to get a bit of a nap in but I wanted one really big nap.

Today was a very good day.  Today saw the return of VH to this blog.  It has been months and months since I got to have a run with VH.  Despite her being very tired we got 4ks in.  There is some work to do there for both of us but it was such a lovely run.  Here is VH's playlist:

Talking head - Psycho killer
The Doors- Break on through
Lana del Ray - Video games
Bloc party - Say it right
David Bowie - Modern love
The doors - Riders of the storm
Tegan and Sara - Dancing in the dark
Dexys Midnight runners - Come on Eileen (do they have other songs?)
Sia - Paranoid android

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run...this where I am)

I haven't updated my map in a long time.  Here is where I am.

If you would like to visit the Croki Riverside Caravan park please click on this link.  It looks like a lovely spot to stop if you are running through.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Today is a holiday in Brisbane.  It's Ekka day.  Ekka day is a day....I actually don't know what Ekka day is or how its come about.  The kids get a day off school.....I think they go somewhere.....oh I don't know what happens.  I woke up early and drove to the city (I dropped Mrs Slowrunning off at work...she had to work while I had the day off) and parked along the river.  I had planned on doing a 10k run.  The Bridge to Brisbane is 3 weeks away and I have promised myself that I'm going to run the whole way.  I've done the 10ks B2B twice now and there is a hill at the end that beats me each time.....but it wont beat me this year.

I had planned on turning around once I hit the 5k mark and complete the 10ks.....but when I got to about 4ks I was feeling pretty good and decided to do 12ks.  It was a great feeling.  In the past I've gotten tired and decided to end a run earlier.  It's a nice feeling to extend a run.  By the time I got to about the 8k run I was getting pretty tired and couldn't believe that I had another 4ks to finish.  I can proudly say that I ran the whole 12ks.  This is the longest I have ever run without stopping.  Last year I ran 15ks but there was some walking involved.  In total I ran for one hour and sixteen minutes and burned 1024 calories.  It was a good day.

Earlier in the week I ran 7ks.  It was a great run (despite the rising heat.....I thought this was winter!) as I ran I was streaming the Toronto Blue Jays game on my iPhone.  So, here I am in Brisbane Australia running along the Brisbane river listening to a baseball game from home.  How cool is that!

Stats:
Distance: 19.19ks (12 miles)
Total kilometres: 598.19 ks (371.7 miles)
Kilometres left: 401.81 ks (249.7 miles)

It has been a few days since I have updated the blog.  Sorry 'bout that.  I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to update.  It's not like I am not running.  I'm still running just as much.  I'll have to keep on top of my blog writing.

I've had some good runs and some terrible runs.  I had one run that lasted .64 of a kilometer.  It was horrible.  I realized that while I was trying to run I hadn't drunk any water that day and I was dehydrated!  Every step resulted in my brain being jolted.  That will never happen again.

I've also started to run to podcasts instead of music.  That has been an interesting switch.  It's one that I will continue to use.  I quickly get tired of playlists and this is a way to listen to something different.  I can't say I could do it on every run.  But every so often it really works wonders.  I wonder if I will ever listen to audio books?

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I have 3 very good runs.  On the last 3 days I've run over 18ks.  This might be the most I've run in a 3 day period.  I'm not feeling sore at all.  Sure, I wake up like an 80 year old man hobbling around but a small price to pay for how great I am feeling right now.  I should really get off the computer and go do some laundry because I am out of running gear and had to use one of my Manchester United kit to run in today.  I would prefer not to do that.  So I am off to wash my clothes.

Peace out!

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

Well.....I'm back.  I spent 4 days in Sydney and I loved every second of it (except for the part where I went to Bondi Beach and walked to North Bondi while Manchester United showed up and trained at South Bondi!) and I am currently trying to convince my wife that we need to move to Sydney.  I'll let you know how that goes.

My hotel was 1.5ks from the Sydney Opera House.  I managed to get 3 runs to the Opera House.  My first run to the Opera House was fantastic.  Its such an iconic building that actually running up the Opera House steps surreal.  I did have a Rocky moment when I finally got to the top steps and looked back over Sydney Harbour.....but I promise I didn't do the Rocky dance....nor was the Rocky theme song playing in my head.  In fact my playlist was perfect.  I picked nothing but U2 songs (no hits just deep cuts) and my run up the steps was done to Ultraviolet (light my way).

The run across the Harbour Bridge was equally surreal.  I got a little bit lost at first and spotted a fellow runner who just finished her run.  I asked her if this was the way to run over the Harbour Bridge?  She smiled and said yes it was.  I didn't rush and just took my time.  Over the Bridge and back to my hotel was 4ks.

My last run was the best one.  I ran over the Harbour Bridge and then back to the Hotel where I dropped off my jumper to the front desk (it was 7c when I started my run but it was a bad idea to wear the a jumper....it got way to warm quickly) and then it was off to the Opera House and back for a 6k run.

It was a run of a life time and if you ever get a chance to run in Sydney do yourself a favour and run to the Opera House.  It will change your life.

Half way through

I've done 3 runs since my last post.....but I don't want to talk about that right now.  I'm at the half way point.  I've reached 500ks this year.  That is more then I did all of last year.  That is quite a nice feeling.  And tomorrow I fly out to Sydney for a quick holiday and I get to run to the Sydney Opera House.  This is a dream come true.  I'm going to wake up early Friday morning and run from my hotel to the Sydney Opera House.

The reason I am going to Sydney is to see Manchester United play against the A-League All-starts.  I've always wanted to see Man U play and I finally get my chance.  Lots of pictures to come!

So.......how are you?

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I didn't get a chance to run on the weekend.  My calf muscle was quite sore.  It cramped on me a couple of times on Saturday.  I decided not to risk it and just rested for 2 days.  I think it was a smart move because I've got in some very good runs the last 2 days.  Yesterday I got in a quick dirty 5k and felt pretty good about it.  It's incredible what a stress relief my runs are.  I couldn't imagine not having this in my life.  I started this new job at work and the learning curve is pretty intense.  In fact I woke up at 1 am last night and couldn't fall back asleep for hours.

Today's run was a personal favourite.  I was so into my run that I didn't want to stop.  When I hit 6ks I just kept going and ran for another 300 meters before I realized I had to pick up Mrs Slowrunning from work.  I felt great.

Off day tomorrow.....back to running on Thursday.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run....sometimes with a dog)

It was a lovely Saturday today.  So lovely that Mrs Slowrunning decided to go for a swim.  I thought it would be a great idea if I took the Slowrunning Dog out for a run with me.  Now she is a tiny little thing....so I didn't think I could do 6 or 7ks.  I thought at most we could do 3ks.  The Slowrunning Dog was very excited to get going.....and that lasted for about 1 minute.  The rest of the time was spent peeing and shitting (the slowrunning dog not me) all over the place.  In total I was able to get 2ks in.....very very slowly.

I also completed a run yesterday that was a typical run for me.  Just under 6ks.  Managed 5ks under the 30 minute mark.  All very productive.  With the small little run today I've done over 20ks this week.  A solid result.  The good news is that I now can do a long run tomorrow to make up for my little run today.  I think I might try that simulated 90 minutes football run.  I'll let you know how that goes.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

The weather has brightened up.  It was a beautifully fantastic 21c tonight.  With not a worry in my head I was off running.  It wasn't my best run but it was ok.  I got 6ks in which I was pretty happy with.  I felt myself getting tired at the end and was pretty happy when it was over.  Mrs. Slowrunning got a swim in which she hasn't been trying to get in for weeks.  If the weather holds up tomorrow then she can get in another swim which means I can get in another 6k run.

I've been thinking of a way to re-stimulate my weekend runs.  Trying to run 8 to 10ks on the same track that I've been running for years is really boring.  I think its time to explore the neighbourhood.  So this what I'm going to try and do on Sunday.  I just Googled how many ks a soccer player runs in 90 minutes (length of a soccer/football game).  It looks like the average is between 10 and 12ks.  I might go for a 90 minute run but simulate a football game and see how many ks I can do.  An interesting thought.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

I've been running but not updating my blog like I should.  This blog post is about 3 runs.  The 3 runs are a mixed bag.  My run today was fantastic.  It really should not have been.  I had a stressful day at work.  Every time I tried to leave work and go for my run I was delayed.  It was also raining pretty badly.  But I just felt compelled to run.  I was also amazed how much I loved running in the rain.  I was getting drenched, splashing through puddles with a big stupid smile on my face.  In fact all the other runners that ran past me had stupid grins on their faces.  Runners are a strange breed.

The other 2 runs where quite bland.  One of them was only a 4k run and I hit a wall and could not run another step.  That was rather disappointing.  I haven't hit a wall like that in a long time.  I hope I don't have many more of those days.
