Brisbane to Sydney Opera House (virtual run)

If you are reading this blog for the first time then I should tell you what I mean by a virtual run to the Sydney Opera House.  I live in Brisbane Australia (my door step is exactly 1010 kilometers or 627 miles away from the Opera House) and I'm going to try and run the 1010 kilometers in a calendar year.  The inspiration for my goal was from loyal blog reader and dear friend JVN who mentioned that she had run over a 1000 kilometers in one year.  I was very impressed by this and I wanted to do the same.  Currently I have run 56k's (not includding the 3 that I have run today.....but more on that later) which means to meet my goal I have to run 84 ks a month and roughly 21ks a week(this week I have run over 8ks).  Yikes.  While 56ks looks good for the 5th day of Janurary that is 2 months worth of running.  My running has been curtailed by injury, the Christmas period and tropical heat.  The good news is that I'm fully healed and Christmas is over....the bad news.......I live in Brisbane Australia and it is currently summer.  I've been living in Brisbane for almost 6 years having moved here from Toronto Canada (for love).  I don't handle the heat very well.  For instance today I woke up at 5:30 am and ran my 3ks in 23c heat.  This will mean for the next few months waking up at 5 or 5:30 in the morning is just something that I will have to get used to doing.

The run today was good.  I'm no where near at the fitness level I was back in October.  But I am getting there.  I have also decided on when I am going to attempt my half marathon.  August the 4th The Brisbane Marathon and half marathon is run.  The most I have ever completed was 15ks.  So here is the schedule that I have planned for the next 6 months.  By Feburary 28th to have completed a 10k run.  From March 1st to mid July I will be training to run the half marathon and will complete another 15k run sometime late July.  From there its all about building up my fitness level and going from 15ks to 16ks to 17ks etc etc.

I hope you follow along my journey and witness my ups and downs.  If you are a fellow runner and have any advice for this novice please leave a comment on this blog posting.

  1. Sounds like you have a plan to catch up. I don't like running in the heat also. The sidewalks here are so icy, I've been running about 35kms a week on my treadmill, it's getting boring! I can't complain watching tv and running isn't all that bad!

    1. Do you own a treadmill? That's great doing 35ks a week. You, Henri and Sadie should come over in August and we can run the half marathon :)
